FAQ

Common questions

What is MTD for Income Tax?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) means landlords and sole traders keep digital records and send HMRC a short update every quarter, plus a final declaration after the tax year. It is in force on a phased timetable: from 6 April 2026 for qualifying income over £50,000, from 6 April 2027 over £30,000, and from 6 April 2028 over £20,000.

How long does a quarterly update take?

Around ten minutes. Export your bank statement as a CSV, upload it, check the categories Quartax suggests, and submit. Quartax remembers how you categorise each payee, so later quarters are quicker.

Who can use Quartax?

UK landlords with property income and sole traders with self-employment income. You need a Government Gateway account, Self Assessment registration, and to be signed up for MTD for Income Tax with HMRC.

I've never done bookkeeping. Is that a problem?

No. MTD needs a digital record of each transaction and its category. Your bank statement already has the dates and amounts; Quartax suggests the categories and you check them. That's your record.

I have a job as well. Does that matter?

Your salary doesn't count towards the MTD threshold. Quartax sends your self-employment and property figures, and you add your employment income in your HMRC online account at the year end.

Can I combine several bank accounts?

Yes. Upload several CSVs for the same quarter and Quartax combines them, or edit one CSV to include everything. You can exclude personal transactions on the review screen and add transactions manually.

Is my bank data sent to AI?

Transaction descriptions are anonymised before AI processing - account numbers, sort codes, card numbers, postcodes, emails and phone numbers are stripped automatically, along with names where we can detect them. The AI never sees your NINO, UTR or HMRC details. The HMRC submission contains only category totals, not individual transactions. If you prefer not to use AI, enter transactions manually.

What does it cost?

Your first return is free, and you don't need a card to start. After that it's £39 a year for one income source, or £59 a year for up to three. Cancel any time.
