Quartax vs Hammock for MTD.
Hammock is a well-established landlord accounting app, and says it was the first landlord software HMRC recognised for MTD. Quartax does less, on purpose. Here's an honest look at which suits which landlord.

Choose Hammock if
- You want profit and loss for each property, not just the totals HMRC needs.
- You're happy linking your bank so transactions flow in automatically.
- You have a larger portfolio, or a letting agent or accountant already set up with Hammock.
Choose Quartax if
- You only want MTD done: four updates and the final declaration, with as little admin as possible.
- You'd rather not connect your bank account to anything. You upload a statement when you're ready.
- You own property jointly and want each update to use your share automatically.
- You want the lowest cost for a small portfolio.
Both are recognised by HMRC and both file your quarterly updates and final declaration for property income. The real difference is how much bookkeeping you want. If the answer is "none", try Quartax: your first quarter is free and there's no card needed.

Switching mid-year
MTD updates are cumulative, so you can switch at any quarter. Your next update from the new software carries your year-to-date totals, including the quarters you sent elsewhere. How quarterly updates work.
